I have used portable generators in my business since 1982. I have had several differant generators. Then I started using Honda generators. My costs went down to normal maintainance only! I have yet to have to rebuild one of them yet!
So to answer you, Honda makes the best generator.
I agree Honda makes a very good generator. I have been using them for about 5 years now, and haven’t had a problem yet.
They also seem to take abuse, I’m not very gentle with them, when I am moving them around. Depending on the size you need, they make some smaller ones that are very quiet, I have 2 of their smaller ones that I use ice fishing, and for my hunting shack.
I bought a brand new Coleman with a Tecumseh motor. I am going to sell it next summer and buy one that will start when it gets cold outside. Coleman is a hunk of junk. And they refuse to stand behind it.
I’m very pleased with my Generac 5500XL. Honda generators have a very good reputation.
The best portable for your money would depend upon what your intended use is. If it is for an occasional power outage one of the Coleman generators could be adequate. If you are doing contractor work with heavy daily usage spend some more and get one of the Honda units. Either way, you need to perform routine maintenance and testing to ensure maximum life.

Kohler makes good ones
Kohler does make good ones, but they specialize in larger, permanent installation ones. I’d go with Honda. Great reliability, quite lightweight.

Good Luck.

Onan, Generac, Honda, and Kohler.

Keep away from the cheap Chinese imports…
